There’s Nothing Like A Roughed Up Piece of Paper

I’m a die-hard digi scrapper. Before I became a die-hard digi scrapper, however, I was a die-hard paper scrapper, and I still have the stash of paper to prove it. And boy am I glad I do, because that stash of paper has allowed me to create all kinds of wonderful textures for my digi scrapped pages.

jhi_sspaper_washedworn_mktg_150There’s nothing like taking a clean, smooth sheet of paper and working all kinds of magic on it to see what kind of new, grungy texture I can create. What shall I do with it today? Shall I wet it, and wring it out and see what it looks like? Shall I peel the top layer of fibers back to create wonderful, scruffed up looks. Shall I rough up the edges a bit, to let the white core show through? Or my latest creations, let’s fold or scrunch up some papers, stick them in the pockets of jeans and jackets and send them through the washer and dryer! What fun!

jhi_sspaper_washedworn_lo_300The real magic happens, however, when I start adding the papers to my layouts, combining them with other ScrapSimple Paper Templates or background papers to create new and beautiful looks. I wanted a more subtle look for this layout, so I kept the ScrapSimple Paper Template: Washed and Worn (the top paper) a solid color, tinting it a very light green. I then used one of my ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Scrubbed Raw in combination with a background paper to create a sweet frame around the top paper. I wanted to keep this layout simple, to match the simplicity of a boy and his bubble, so I just added a few more embellishments and some word art and called it done.

Now, what’s next? Hmm….Ro was speculating about stones and a creek. That could be interesting!

Styles and Masks and Blending Modes, Oh My!

There are many different effects one can use in Photoshop to create great digital scrapbooking layouts. Some are easy, and some seem hard, but are actually pretty easy once you learn the tricks. Most of them are techniques that can take your pages from so-so to over-the-top with just a few clicks.

jhi_4x6-brushset_brshstrkfrms_lo_300In this layout, I used all three of the elements mentioned in the title. I used my Brush Set: 4×6 Brush Stroke Frames on the photo, and then applied one of the styles from ScrapSimple Tools – Styles: Well Loved 5001. The 3 rectangles above the photos are three different background papers applied to my ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Photo Masks – Brush Strokes. Who says you can only use photo masks for photos! Finally, I used the alpha from the A Little Worn Out Collection. This alpha started as a cream color, but when I applied the Difference blending mode, the letters changed to this bluish-grey color, which picks up some of the colors from the photo nicely.

The lesson to be learned here is to take the time to play with the tools offered in Photoshop in combination with your digital scrapbooking elements. Think of how you can use them in ways they may not be intended. The results may surprise you, and will take your layouts up a notch!

Why in the World Would I Want to WOWY?

Your first question may be What in the World is WOWY, rather than the question I posed in the title. And I don’t blame you. You may have never heard of WOWY, even if you are familiar with Beachbody and its workout programs.

What is WOWY

WOWY stands for Work Out With You and it is Beachbody’s virtual super-gym, where Beachbody members can log in and join others from all around the world in the workout of their choice. It’s a fairly simple system that allows you to schedule your workouts, line up buddies to work out with, and even interact if you wish in the Cool Down Chatroom when your workout is over.

So, Why WOWY

So now that you have an idea of what WOWY is, let’s talk about why you would want to WOWY. The main reason for WOWY is to give you support so that you’ll maintain consistency in your workout program. That is the bottom line of why WOWY exists, and it is very important factor in all of Beachbody’s programs. Beachbody wants you to succeed and they are providing as many tools as they can to help you succeed.

The first thing you see when you click the WOWY button on your Team Beachbody page is the scheduler. This is a great little tool that can help you stay committed to your program. You can schedule your workout for the day, choosing the time you’re going to work out. You can also schedule your workouts further out in the future. Because Beachbody programs come with a schedule already set up, you can plug this into WOWY, choose the time of day you want to work out and be all set to push play when the time comes.

You can also choose workout buddies to meet you in WOWY to work out with you. This is a great way to stay accountable and again, keep with your program. If you are scheduled to meet someone in WOWY, you are more likely to get ready and workout if you know someone is waiting for you, right? You may say, “But I don’t know anyone to work out with?” This maybe true at the beginning, but if you have a coach, you could arrange to workout with your coach. Perhaps you have started to post on the Team Beachbody Message Board and are getting to know people there. You could arrange to work out together in WOWY, creating a great online support system. The great thing about this is that you don’t have to live in the same place, or get up and drive to a gym to work out with a friend. You can arrange to work out with people from all over the country, all meeting in WOWY to sweat it out together. You don’t even have to be working the same program. You can still offer support and encouragement, and maybe learn a little bit about the different programs while you’re at it.

Get Fit and Win!

If you’re looking for a way to meet up with like-minded people, build a support system or simply get a good workout, then pop into WOWY. But that’s not all! Every day, Beachbody gives away prizes in WOWY. You may be one of the lucky individuals chosen who wins an iPod Touch, a digital camera or even cash prizes of $300 or $1000! Win a prize and get fit at the same time! You can’t beat that.

As the saying goes, though, you can’t win if you don’t play, or in this case, if you don’t log in to WOWY. And you can’t log in to WOWY if you’re not a Team Beachbody member. So if you use Beachbody products, but have never joined, I encourage you to join now. Another cool benefit of joining the club (there are both free and pay memberships) is that you will be assigned a coach who will support you in your fitness journey. As you can see, Beachbody is committed to your fitness, and wants to support you in every way possible, so why not take them up on their offer?

Whole Wheat Chocolate Chip Cookies – Healthy and Yummy!

cookies1Every weekend for the past 4 or 5 weeks I have been making Whole Wheat Chocolate Chip Cookies as a sweet treat for my family. We are a family that loves our sweets, so I always try to have something relatively more healthy and clean on hand to satisfy that craving.

I have tried several different cookie recipes over the months since we started eating clean, and while most of them have been acceptable to a certain degree, they were never as whole-heartedly loved as this recipe is. I thought I would share the recipe with you, since I’m sure my family is not the only one that craves something sweet as an evening treat.

I originally got this recipe from Spark People and have modified it a bit to suit our needs better. Here is the original recipe:

Serves: 36

cookies2INGREDIENTS
1 cup all purpose flour
1-1/2 cups whole wheat flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
3/4 cup Splenda
3/4 cup brown sugar
3/4 cup butter (unsalted, and softened)
1/4 cup applesauce
2 egg yolks
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
12-ounce bag of semisweet chocolate chips

DIRECTIONS
Preheat Oven to 375 degrees F.
In a large bowl sift together flours, baking soda and salt.
In a separate bowl cream together Splenda, brown sugar, butter, applesauce, egg yolks and vanilla extract.
Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and pour in chocolate chips. Stir until combined, don’t overmix.
Scoop onto baking sheet covered with parchment paper.
Bake 13-18 minutes.
Makes about 3 dozen cookies.

NUTRITION INFO (per cookie)
Calories: 148.7
Fat: 8.9 g
Carbohydrates: 17.5 g
Protein: 1.7 g

I modified the recipe by changing the Splenda to Sucanat, which is a type of Organic Cane Sugar. (Sometimes I use Splenda instead. I switch back and forth. It doesn’t make a difference to the taste, but the Splenda cookies do seem to be a little lighter and fluffier.) Instead of butter, I use Olivio, an Olive Oil-based margarine. And instead of two egg yolks I use one whole egg and one egg white. I have also been substituting 1/2 of the chocolate chips for butterscotch chips. They make a really yummy addition to these cookies.

I have to say, these are some of the best cookies I have ever made. They always come out very light and cake-like, so if you like that type of cookie, then this recipe is for you!

Independent Beachbody Coach – It’s me!

We are doing it. We are taking our first step towards a future of financial independence. That is our dream. That is our goal. Will this road lead us there? With work and attention and determination, I believe it can.

Mike and I have decided to become Independent Beachbody Coaches. We are firm believers in the Beachbody programs, having used four of them now. We have seen the results in our overall fitness and health, and would like to help others achieve that kind of health and fitness. Obesity is such a horrendous problem in our country, and it doesn’t have to be that way. By taking this step, we are hoping to make a small dent in the number of people who are suffering from obesity or who are headed that way, regardless of age.

I am working on setting up my business, and I will post more here once it is open for business. In the meantime, if you are interested in taking that first step towards a healthier you, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with me. I am excited to get to know you and work with you!
